Common sense finally prevails with the Supreme Court’s ruling that the definition of a woman is based on biological sex. But, what a surprise – Labour ministers, left-wing MPs and hardline trans activists are still failing to fully accept the ruling. Interviewed on the radio, health minister Karin Smyth failed four times to clarify which changing room trans women should use in light of the Supreme Court judgment, insisting only that it was “important that a trans woman or a trans man also has dignity in their use of public spaces.”

Of course, that is true. No one wants to see trans people discriminated against. And that was the beauty of the Supreme Court’s ruling – which came about thanks to the efforts of a small group of incredibly brave Scottish women, plus the wonderful JK Rowling. It protected women AND trans people.

The ruling emphasised that transgender people already have protections against discrimination and harassment, written into the Equality Act. That doesn’t mean they get to trample all over women-only spaces. And yes, I understand, this will cause a headache if we need to create gender-neutral bathrooms and spaces to that end, but frankly that is what should have happened originally.

Ambiguity from the Government and law left a vacuum which has been filled with the shrill, angry voices of military trans activists. Sadly, all they have done is provoke a backlash against many ordinary trans people who just want to get on with their lives. That is why this ruling should provide certainty to everyone. And also why Labour MPs and members of the Government do it such a
disservice by continuing their pie-in-the-sky ramblings about equality.

We have equality. This ruling has underlined that. It is the law. End of. Sir Keir Starmer needs to take a close look at his ministerial team and back benches. This should draw a line under the issue and we must now all be able to move on.
