Jetting off on holiday often conjures images of sipping a refreshing beverage under the sun's golden rays.
There's something about basking in warm weather that pairs perfectly with a chilled drink in hand. It was this same vacation vibe that left one man astounded when he stumbled upon an unexpected find at Burger King in Spain - beer on the menu.
Harry, who shares his exploits under the moniker harrytokky on TikTok, sparked quite the discussion after revealing his discovery online. Admitting his ignorance of Burger King's boozy offerings in Spain, he explained that his fondness for Benidorm led him to check out what turned out to be quite a talked about topic.
Upon stepping into the establishment, he found that he could grab a beer for just €3.06 (£2.62). It was served in a paper cup, and appeared quite generous in size.
Harry mused in his video: "It's true, you can get a beer from Burger King. Would I pay €3.06? I don't know. Would you pay €3 for a beer from Burger King?"
His footage drew plenty of commentary, igniting a debate among his viewers who shared various opinions. One commenter announced to Harry's astonishment: "Going to blow your mind here. So do McDonald's and have done for about 20 years."
While another teased: "You don't know if you'd spend €3 on a beer after spending €3 on a beer." Another asked amusingly: "Burger King or McDonald's beer?"
The topic of buying beer in McDonald's Spain has been discussed on Quora, where someone offered a detailed explanation for why it's served there.
An individual commented on the platform: "Two reasons, both cultural. One: I have never seen anyone drunk in a McDonald's. Not even McHappy. The Spanish can, and do, drink one beer purely as a beverage.
"Beer in Spain is not necessarily a vehicle to get alcohol into your body. The alcohol is merely a part of the drink... which is why non-alcoholic beer is a huge market here (and nobody drinks seven of those either)."
Furthermore, they explained: "Drinking is very cheap in Spain. Although your liver can't afford what your wallet so readily can, you can get a can of generic beer cheaper than a can of Coca Cola (I have seen 25 cent beer). But being drunk in public is not really socially accepted, so nobody does it. I suspect this also has something to do with the lower violent crime rates in Spain.
"Two: Beer and fast food are seen as 'American' and a good mix. Even though you would not imagine beer in McDonald's in the States... Spanish people would. So there is a demand for 'a' (just one) beer with the meal. No cocktail bar.
"While I am sure that tourists have come and gotten McWasted, it is so rare that accommodating one beer with a meal people, and refusing service to those who are schnockered (or even seem to be heading down the road to Pifflecatia) is perfectly logical."
Interestingly, fast food giants like Burger King and McDonald's are permitted to serve beer in Spain and several other European nations - a practice that is relatively commonplace in these parts. The decision to offer beer ultimately lies with the individual franchisees in these locations.
