London airports have been in the spotlight recently after Skytrax's ranking of airports saw three of the capital's airports bag spots in the top 100. London Heathrow, Gatwick, and City airports were all named as some of the best aviation hubs in the world. However, one airport in particular has made an impressive mark. London Luton found its way into the 'world's best low-cost airline terminals' category. The airport came 10th place in the category's top 10.

Skytrax awards are handed out based on votes from survey respondents around the world. The company, which assessed 575 airports worldwide, considers factors such as baggage delivery times, airport cleanliness, and staff friendliness to rank the airports.

When it comes to the 'best low-cost airline terminals in the world' category, Skytrax describes it as celebrating "airport terminals that specialise in providing service to low-cost airlines."

Alberto Martin, chief executive officer of London Luton Airport, said: "We are thrilled to be named best low-cost airline terminal in the UK, and one of the top ten globally in the Skytrax awards. It reflects the hard work of the incredible teams across London Luton Airport, who are passionate about delivering outstanding value and a simple and friendly passenger experience.

"It also underlines the commitment of our airline partners, which include several of the biggest low-cost carriers. The recently approved sustainable growth plans for LLA, proposed by the airport owner Luton Rising, pave the way for many more exciting new opportunities to innovate and improve the passenger experience."

The small airport has won several awards. Last year, Airports Council International (ACI Europe) named it the Best European Airport (10 - 25 million passengers), and in 2023, Conde Nast Traveller readers named it the Best UK airport.

At the beginning of April, the Secretary of State for Transport approved the airport's expansion plans, which will see the airport's yearly passenger capacity expand from 18 million to 32 million.

The plans include a new terminal, additional taxiways, and other transport infrastructure.
