A travel personality has urged passengers getting ready to go on a cruise holiday not to make three packing mistakes. Knowing exactly what to pack for a cruise can be a challenging experience, with many ships sailing to a wide range of destinations, each with its own climate.

However, in a recent video, Ilana Schautter from the YouTube channel Life Well Cruised urged all tourists to avoid packing a number of items in their checked luggage, including any medications they may need to take. She advised: "Let's start with one of the most important items: medications. Never ever place your medications in your checked luggage. Bags can be delayed, rerouted, or, in very rare cases, not make it onto the cruise ship. Once you're at sea, there is no pharmacy waiting for you. This includes everything from daily medications, EpiPens, inhalers, and even motion sickness medication. Cruise lines recommend that all necessary medications are carried on with you, although it isn't necessary to have them in their original containers."

Much like at an airport, cruise passengers will need to hand over their large suitcases to be checked separately when embarking and disembarking from the ship.

These bags will be sent directly to the passenger's cabin; however, the process can take a number of hours and occasionally results in logistical issues that could leave guests without all of their bags for an extended period of time.

As a result, it is a good idea for passengers to make sure that any essential items are kept in their carry-on bags that they are able to take directly on board the ship.

Later in the video, Ilana also suggested that passengers always avoid putting their passport or other forms of ID into their checked luggage, warning that the simple mistake could result in them being refused access to the ship.

She added: "I cannot stress this enough. Never place your passport or ID in your checked luggage; always have it on you. Not having this on you and presenting it at boarding time can, and often does, result in being denied boarding.

"It's a good idea to have a dedicated travel wallet or zippered pouch where you can keep your passport and other important documents, including visas if you need them, right on your person."

Finally, Ilana urged all passengers to make sure that there are no drinks, including alcohol, in their checked luggage, which may lead to damaged property and confiscations.

She continued: "Most cruise lines do allow you to bring along a limited amount of beverages on board, but they are very specific rules about how you bring them. Typically, each adult is allowed to carry on one or two bottles of wine or champagne, but here's the key: they must be in your carry-on.

"If you pack them in your checked luggage, not only could they break (and, trust me, you don't want red wine all over your clothes), but they'll likely be confiscated when screening. The same goes for juice boxes, canned soda, and other non-alcoholic drinks."
