Nationwide customers who utilised their current accounts in March could be eligible for a £100 summer bonus. The UK's largest building society may distribute more free payments as part of its Fairer Share scheme. Over the past two years, more than three million customers who met the criteria have benefitted. Last year, to qualify, customers needed to have used their current accounts up until March 31.

This included making purchases with a debit card, having direct debits going out, or receiving income such as salaries. Additionally, they needed to either have a mortgage or savings account with Nationwide and maintain at least £100 in savings, or owe at least £100 on a Nationwide mortgage.

If the same rules apply this year, customers who were active in March could be in for a payday, provided they also have a savings account or mortgage and meet the criteria. Although the building society has not yet confirmed if the scheme will return this year, experts believe it is likely.

An official announcement is anticipated on May 29. If approved, payments are expected to follow in June, reports Birmingham Live.

This would be the latest Nationwide giveaway following its £50 'big thank you' payments to over 12 million customers after the acquisition of Virgin Money. According to executives, such giveaways are another reason for Brits to choose Nationwide.

Nationwide's Fairer Share scheme isn't guaranteed to run every year, as it depends on the building society's financial health. However, top brass have suggested a return is on the cards, with hints that it's their "intention" to bring back the initiative in 2025.
