Armed police were called to the scene of a shooting after a man was shot in the leg. The victim, a man in his 30s, has been rushed to hospital for treatment.

At around 6.45pm this evening police had reports that two men dressed in black with their faces covered left the area on a bike shortly after the shooting on Windsor Road, TuebrookOfficers believe that the incident was targeted and remain at the scene.

Neighbours in the area said they heard 'three or four bangs' before police arrived at the scene. A neighbour on the Albert Road side of the cordon said: "We heard the gunshots. We heard three or four bangs. When you hear a bang, it always goes through your head, but you think, no, surely it's just fireworks."

"I never thought anything of it, but then I heard this car going up the road mad, and when I looked out, it was police It wasn't a big bang. It was loud enough for a bang, but different from a firework in that it was more contained, it wasn't as explosive."

There were at least nine police vehicles, including two Scientific Support vans, at the scene, reports Liverpool Echo. 

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police told the ECHO: "We are appealing for information after a man was shot in the leg in Tuebrook this evening, Tuesday 22 April. At around 6.45pm, it was reported that a man aged in his 30s had been shot on Windsor Road and emergency services, including armed police, were called to the scene.

"The victim has been taken to hospital for treatment for his injury. It was further reported that two males, wearing all black clothing with their faces covered, left the area on a bike just after the firearm was discharged.

"Although we are in the very initial stages of the investigation, it's believed that this incident was targeted and enquiries are ongoing to find the suspects. Officers remain at the scene to provide reassurance to the community and also carry out initial CCTV and witness enquiries."

Detective Inspector Jay Halpin said: "We are in the very early stages of the investigation and we are determined to find the people responsible. To open fire at someone in such a reckless manner could clearly have had much more serious if not fatal consequences. We believe that the suspects fled the area on a bike and enquiries are ongoing to locate them and find the weapon used in this incident.

"We are also keen to speak to anyone who was in the general area who saw or heard anything suspicious or believes they captured something significant on their dashcam, CCTV or doorbell camera. We know that guns cause misery on our streets and we would ask for the public's help in coming forward with any bit of information they have so we can find the people responsible."
