The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its guidance for people travelling to Turkey. As the government's foreign affairs department one task of the FCDO is to provide regular advice for travel to any of some 226 overseas nations and territories.
In the wake of Turkey being rocked by three powerful earthquakes, FCDO has amended its guidance for the nation. One quake with a magnitude of more than six has hit Istanbul, with tourist areas impacted.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) says the earthquake was felt at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles). According to Michigan Tech University, an earthquake at magnitude 6 may cause a lot of damage in very populated areas.
A new alert on Gov.uk, issued on Wednesday, April 23, reads: "Many parts of Turkey regularly experience earthquakes and tremors. These can be a high magnitude, cause damage to infrastructure, and pose a risk to life.
