A travel expert has unveiled her secrets to becoming a master of packing light and avoiding those pesky baggage claim areas at airports. With more holidaymakers opting to bypass the traditional checked luggage route, Sophie Nadaeu from Solo Sophie's travel blog has shared how embracing hand luggage can revolutionise your travels.
She has revealed the essential criteria she uses for picking out the perfect carry-on case. And one of the most important things you can do it opt for a lightweight yet robust design. Because of this, one style of suitcase should be avoided.
Offering her personal preferences, she suggested: "When it comes to carry on cases, I personally look for a bag that's not too heavy, as many airlines have a restriction on the weight of your bag and the case is factored into this, and something that is durable as well as spacious.
"A personal favourite of mine is a case that is soft as opposed to hard-shelled, so that I can stuff more things in!"
Moreover, Sophie recommended thoughtful packing, urging travellers to select items that can pull double duty, such as a scarf that doubles up as a blanket.
She also recommended selecting versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched, sticking with neutral shades and patterns.
Sophie noted: "When it comes to travelling with hand luggage only, you'll want to try and be as organised as possible so that you can make proper use of the space available. This means compartmentalising your things and placing them in plastic bags, or canvas bags if you're trying to be environmentally friendly.
"Be sure to bring plenty of extra bags so you don't have to mix your clean and dirty laundry, no one likes doing this, even by accident!"
If you're in need of a new suitcase for your summer travels, then it's worth avoiding not only hard-shelled ones, but black ones too. According to a survey by Eminent, more than 40 percent of suitcases purchased are this colour.
Whether it's a checked bag or a piece of hand luggage, you want your bag to stand out, so that someone else doesn't mistake it for theirs and take it home. So opting for a bright colour or pattern can really help.
