New bodycam footage has revealed that Betsy Arakawa believed her and Gene Hackman were being followed two months before their deaths. In a clip from a police interview that has now been made public by Fox News, her hairstylist explains the pianist's fears regarding their mystery 'stalker'.
Betsy told Christopher about two incidents in December where a stranger parked outside their gated residence and waited for the couple to go for a drive. Once they were in their car, he tailed them to their destination before approaching them. According to Christopher, Betsy seemed 'frazzled' while speaking about her security concerns. The hairstylist told law enforcement: "She mentioned to me that there was a man that had parked outside of their gate and followed them.
"On two separate occasions. One occasion is when they went to White Rock. They went and had lunch there and the guy followed them from parked [outside of their gated community], followed them all the way to White Rock. The guy pulled out a folder of photos of her husband and wanted him to sign them."
Betsy spoke to the man and warned him that he "needed to have more respect", presumably for the couple's privacy. Despite this, he then followed them to Pecos on a seperate occasion.
Christopher said the second time, he came up to the celebrities again, offering them a bottle of wine. They declined the drink.
The stylist added that Betsy was concerned by the stranger's ability to lay in wait outside their home because their security "didn't know how he got there".
Christopher became worried for Betsy after hearing this story, and told her: "Oh my gosh, Betsy, that's crazy. You should not have approached this person. This makes me nervous." Speaking to police, he added: "He knew what [they] drove. That's the scary part."
Gene, 95, and Betsy, 65, were found dead inside their home in Santa Fe on February 26. Both of their bodies were in a state of partial mummification, and it's estimated that they died up to a week before being found.
Gene was found to have died of heart disease and Alzheimer's a week after Betsy passed away from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome - a rare viral disease which can be transmitted to humans by infected mice or rats.
