The brief face-to-face meeting between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky held this morning in the Vatican was caught on camera. The Ukrainian President also met with the UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, and the French President, Emmanuel Macron, a different photo, which also included President Trump, has shown. It has been reported that the US and Ukrainian Presidents are to meet again later.
The White House described a meeting between Trump and Zelensky before the funeral began as "very productive". President Zelensky’s spokesperson, Serhii Nykyforov, said the meeting lasted around 15 minutes. It was the first time the two leaders met in person since a public argument in the White House in February. During the service, Trump and Macron shook hands when the congregation was invited to offer those around them a “sign of peace” – a traditional part of the Roman Catholic mass.
As he touched down in Rome on Friday night, President Trump called for Ukraine and Russia to meet “at very high levels” as a deal is now “very close” to being agreed.
Earlier this week, the US President wrote in a post on Truth Social after Russian attacks on Kyiv killed at least 12 people and injured 90 others overnight into Thursday: "Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP!"
The Prince of Wales spoke briefly to US President Donald Trump and the first lady Melania Trump on his way into the service, Kensington Palace said.
William also encountered and spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron before the mass.
