Outlander's creators have revealed some lesser-known facts about Jamie Fraser, portrayed by Sam Heughan. Executive producer Ronald D. Moore and costume designer Terry Dresbach discussed the significance of the Highlander's kilt in the Starz series. Dresbach stated: "A lot of people are asking me about the kilt and its significance when he wears it."

She clarified that there was no hidden meaning behind its placement.

Speaking on the Official Outlander Podcast, she said: "We always knew we wanted Sam to go in and out of his kilt, it's just questioning what scene is the most appropriate."

She also touched upon season two, where the Frasers were representing Scotland in France, which was reflected in Jamie's attire, particularly one coat. Referring to the coat's motif, Dresbach shared: "I thought how wonderful it would be to do a stag hunt, something very, very Jamie and very Scottish."

She added: "It was important to us at this event, Jamie could really feel like Jamie."

She also mentioned that Sam was thrilled with the coat design.

When asked by Moore why Jamie wore a kilt during his appearance in Versailles, Dresbach explained: "Because, again this was a place where we felt it was appropriate for him to be really very Scottish. Again, like the coat.

"We wanted to have him really represent his country here, the way an ambassador from another country would.

"They're going there not as the English, they're going there as the Scottish."

The contentious scene featured Jamie Fraser squaring off against his archenemy Captain 'Black Jack' Randall in a dramatic duel amidst the opulent gardens of Versailles.

Intriguingly, Captain Randall found himself the subject of mockery and disgrace at the hands of Louis XV, as England was embroiled in conflict with France at the time, fostering a veneer of courteous hostility.

Jamie and Claire's acceptance into the Royal court hinged on their Scottish identity, which contrasted starkly with Black Jack's embodiment of English nationalism, clad in his Redcoat attire.

Throughout Outlander, Jamie's kilt has been emblematic, especially following the Battle of Culloden when the English outlawed tartan, imposing severe punishments for those caught wearing it.

Consequently, the kilt's significance within Outlander escalated post-Culloden due to its associated risks.

As Outlander transitions to the New World, the prominence of the kilt wanes yet it remains a poignant symbol for Jamie, who carries the weight of his heritage wherever he goes.
