Fans of The Last of Us have been left devastated by the death of Joel Miller (portrayed by Pedro Pascal) in HBO's zombie series.

The brutal murder, a revenge act by Abby Anderson (Kaitlyn Dever) for the killing of her father, has left viewers reeling.

Abby, after a five-year hunt, located Joel in Jackson, Wyoming, and subjected him to a prolonged torture before ending his life.

Ellie (Bella Ramsey) accidentally discovered Abby torturing Joel but was attacked herself and couldn't save him, reports the Mirror US.

She vowed vengeance against Abby and her gang, who left Ellie with Joel's bloodied body.

Does Abby die in The Last of Us?

Many are turning to the video game's storyline for clues about whether Abby will fall victim to Ellie's grief in a tragic twist of irony.

The simple answer is no, Abby doesn't die in The Last of Us.

Contrarily, the character sails off to a Firefly base on Catalina Island.

According to Gamespot, Ellie did track Abby down to Seattle and killed several of her friends along the way.

However, during their first encounter, Abby spared Ellie and let her go, warning her that she'd kill her if they ever crossed paths again.

This prompted Ellie to reassess her life choices and return to the farmhouse where she lived with her girlfriend Dina (Isabela Merced).

Still haunted by PTSD following Joel's death and seeking retribution, Ellie once again sets out to find Abby.

Ellie tracks down Abby in Santa Barbara, California. By this point, Abby has suffered greatly at the hands of a group known as The Rattlers.

Despite rescuing Abby and her young ally Lev, Ellie is still consumed by vengeance and instigates a fight with her adversary.

In this encounter, Ellie gains the upper hand but ultimately chooses to spare Abby's life.

This act of mercy from Ellie allows Abby to live and breaks the vicious cycle of violence, but it comes at a significant price.

During their brutal confrontation, Abby bites off two of Ellie's fingers, leaving her physically scarred. Moreover, Ellie remains emotionally shattered by her traumatic experiences.

The Last of Us II video game concludes with Ellie returning to an abandoned farmhouse after being left by Dina. With her mutilated hand, Ellie attempts to play Joel's old guitar without success, before venturing into the woods.
