It's not uncommon to see travellers adding an 'identification marker' to their suitcase before jetting off on holiday.

Not only does it make it easier for them to spot their luggage on the carousel after landing but it also gives them reassurance they haven't walked away with the wrong suitcase.

However, a travel channel on TikTok has issued a warning against this common airport trick, saying it could cause more harm than good.

In a video, they said: "Attention travellers! Tying ribbons to your suitcase might seem like a cute way to personalize your luggage, but it could lead to some major problems.

"A baggage handler has revealed that those colourful ribbons could easily get caught in airport machinery, potentially causing delays and even risking damage or loss of your precious bags!"

Instead, suitcase brand Eminent suggests using colourful stickers or a protective cover to achieve the same goal.

A statement read: "Selecting the right luggage tags and accessories can make your suitcase stand out while adding a touch of personality and practicality.

"When choosing luggage tags, opt for bold colours or eye-catching designs that are easy to spot on a busy carousel.

"Bright hues, patterns, or fun shapes, such as animals or travel-themed designs, can make your luggage instantly recognisable.

"Durability is key when selecting luggage tags. Choose tags made of strong materials like leather, silicone, or reinforced plastic that can withstand rough handling during travel.

"Ensure the attachment mechanism, like a strap or buckle, is sturdy and secure. Some tags even come with locking features for added security."

Sharing their own techniques, one Reddit user said: "Red duct tape crudely wrapped around the suitcase handle won't come off.

"It's ugly, easy to see and the texture is an unmistakeable reminder to others who may grab it. Got that tip from a now retired United captain."

Another user said: "My dad draws red paint marker squares on every side. Travels all the time."

A third user said: "I use duct tape with penguins on it, in all of my travels I’ve never seen anyone else use it."

A final user said: "One of my pieces of luggage is bright pink with black polka-dots and a huge Hello Kitty face on it.

"It was left behind by the airline on my last trip (long story), and I was given a lost luggage form that was already filled out. My luggage was described as pink with no distinguishing features...

"It arrived safely at my hotel the next morning, thankfully. We do use this tip though. All of our luggage is very distinguishable with interesting luggage tags, stickers, etc. It was just very funny to me that my most unique piece was described as 'pink'."
