The whole of Spain, as well as parts of Portugal and France, were affected by a massive power outage on Monday, April 28. 

Key cities including Madrid, Seville and Lisbon - have been hit by a power outage leaving residents without electricty and mobile signal. 

Parts of Madrid underground have been evacuated and traffic lights in the city are not working, according to local media. In Valencia the metro has announced that it has suspended service across the entire network.

Play has been suspended at the Madrid Open tennis tournament. Two singles matches and one doubles match at the ATP Masters 1000 event were underway when power was lost.

The reason for the blackout is currently unknown.
