A major UK coffee chain with over 2,000 branches nationwide has shut another location, in a move that further weakens the high street. Costa Coffee confirmed the closure of another location, leaving latte lovers devastated.
Broxbourne’s Costa closed its doors for the final time last weekend, to the disappointment of many high street regulars. A spokesperson for Costa Coffee told The Sun: “We can confirm that our store in Broxbourne, which is owned and operated by one of our franchise partners, closed on the weekend. Customers can continue to enjoy their favourite Costa coffee at our nearest store in the Morrisons Centre, Hoddesdon.”
Customers took to Facebook to share their reactions to the closure, with many acknowledging the tough business environment currently weighing down high streets.
One user said: “It’s not surprising with the amount of places selling coffee I’m surprised any of them can make it pay.”
Others fretted for the future of the high street, with another user lamenting: “That parade will go now.”
Another chipped in: “With the cost of living and everything else, people just haven’t got the money for coffee!”
The news comes as just the latest closure in a series of Costa Coffee locations bringing down the shutters, with even larger chains feeling the pinch of rising costs and falling footfall.
Costa’s exit from High Road in Broxbourne leaves it neighbours, including Gulshan Indian cuisine, Salonfour hairdressing, Sainsbury’s and Broxbourne Food Centre behind, with the situation unclear as to who, if anyone, will move into the vacated premises.
