Ice hockey ace Matt Petgrave will not face a criminal prosecution after being arrested on suspicion of the manslaughter of Nottingham Panthers ice hockey star Adam Johnson - who died after his throat was sliced open by a skate blade during a match last year. American-born Johnson, 29, suffered devastating injuries during a horror collision with Sheffield Steelers defensive player Petgrave in front of 8,000 horrified fans.
Desperate attempts were made to save Johnson's life as he lay bleeding on the ice at Sheffield's Utilita Arena, shielded by fellow players, before he later died of his injuries in hospital. South Yorkshire Police announced days later that they were investigating the incident and subsequently arrested Petgrave, 31.
The Canadian was said to have been left “devastated” by the tragic death of his opponent.
In a statement the Crown Prosecution Service today confirmed it would not be bringing criminal charges against “the professional ice hockey player” following the death of Adam Johnson during a match between The Sheffield Steelers and The Nottingham Panthers.
Michael Quinn Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor said: “This was a shocking and deeply upsetting incident. The CPS and South Yorkshire Police have worked closely together to determine whether any criminal charges should be brought against the other ice hockey player involved.
“Following a thorough police investigation and a comprehensive review of all the evidence by the CPS, we have concluded that there is not a realistic prospect of conviction for any criminal offence and so there will not be a prosecution. Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Adam Johnson.”
