As King Charles expressed his gratitude for those working to support and care for those who have received a cancer diagnosis, the 76-year-old also paid tribute to the late Dame Deborah James. Aged just 40, Dame Deborah James died in June 2022 after being diagnosed with incurable bowel cancer five years prior.

The King honoured the late journalist, educator, podcast host and charity campaigner, known to many as bowelbabe, in a statement released during an event held this evening at Buckingham Palace. Accompanied by his wife Queen Camilla, the King has hosted Community Based Cancer Support Reception this evening.

In his statement, the King said, "My wife and I are delighted to host you here this evening to celebrate and above all thank those who so selflessly give care, comfort and reassurance to the 390,000 people who, sadly, receive a new cancer diagnosis across the U.K. each year. That is over 1,000 new cases every single day."

The monarch added, "...So to all the researchers pursuing pioneering breakthroughs; to the healthcare professionals providing specialist treatment; to the volunteers offering comfort, or campaigning to raise awareness; and to the fundraisers enabling all this vital work - you have my whole family’s deepest admiration and gratitude.

"Your commitment to early diagnosis, evermore successful therapies and truly holistic care represents the very best our country can offer."

To conclude, the King spoke of Dame Deborah James - remembering her "departing words".

The King said: "And to those who may be receiving such upsetting news today, tomorrow or at any point in the future, I can only echo the departing words of the late Dame Deborah James, whose parents I am delighted to have with us here this evening, and whose example stands as an inspiration to us all, in sickness and in health: 'Find a life worth enjoying; take risks; love deeply; have no regrets; and always, always have rebellious hope.'"

Just months after her death, Prince William paid tribute to Dame Deborah James during a pre-recorded clip shown during the Stand Up To Cancer live show.

He said: "Dame Deborah James was one of those special people who can unite and inspire others with the sheer force of her spirit.

"She encouraged us all to live life to the fullest, to tackle the toughest challenges with strength and bravery and to rally together to stand up to cancer."
