Netflix has teased true crime aficionados with a sneak peek of its upcoming documentary about the infamous British serial killers, Fred and Rosemary West, titled Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story, set to be released on May 14.
The spine-chilling snippet unveiled from the series spotlights the moment Fred West's solicitor, Howard Ogden, is confronted with the macabre sight of teenager Heather West's remains — a grim discovery at the hands of her own parents, buried beneath their garden patio, reports the Mirror US.
Describing the harrowing experience, Ogden recounted in the footage: "I'm taken to Cromwell Street to see the remains. So I'm looking down into this pit, there was the skeleton with the hair in place. Long black hair."
He continued reflecting on the ordeal: "As lawyers we deal with evidential matters and paperwork and so on, but here, you are looking at the result of criminality before your very eyes."
Wrapping up his insights, Ogden remarked: "The kids were right when they talked about Heather. We have found her."
Yet, this finding marks merely the start of an even grimmer reality as Ogden soberly notes: "This was meant to be finding Heather. End of story. It turned out, tragically, that it was only the beginning."
The investigation into the twisted lives of Fred and Rosemary West was initiated in 1992 after police received a covert tip leveling allegations of rape against Fred involving a 13 year old girl.
This accusation prompted an investigation into the duo and their offspring, ultimately shedding light on a disquieting family joke regarding the whereabouts of the Wests' daughter Heather who was said to be buried under the patio.
In 1994, law enforcement commenced excavation at Cromwell Street in search of Heather West, last seen alive in 1987.
Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story is set to illuminate the horrific crimes committed by the Wests, both against their victims and their own offspring.
The couple's heinous acts went undetected for years, with missed opportunities allowing them to continue their vile acts of violence against innocent victims.
In a similar vein to Netflix's Conversations with a Killer series, viewers will be privy to Fred West's police interview tapes where he made some bone-chilling confessions.
As suggested by Ogden in the documentary, discovering Heather was merely the beginning, leading the police to unearth the remains of numerous other women.
In total, the remains of 12 victims were found in the family home, many of whom had endured unthinkable physical and sexual assaults prior to their tragic deaths.
The series reaches its climax with the trial of the Wests, as the police strive to gather evidence against Rose after Fred died by suicide while in his prison cell. Prior to his death, Fred attempted to shield Rose by taking sole responsibility for the crimes.
Moreover, the docuseries has exclusive access to previously unseen police footage and unheard audio recordings.
Relatives of some of the victims have also broken their silence for the first time to express their sorrow and grief.
