A Yorkshire pub is rolling back the cost of a beer to the equivalent of 1945 prices to celebrate VE Day - with nostalgic punters able to quench their thirst for just 7p a pint. When Britons drunk to victory over the Nazis in Europe on May 8, 1945, most would have been able to celebrate with an alcoholic beverage despite the rationing of many staples.
The price of a pint had risen steeply during the war, from an average of 5p in 1939, to around shilling, 12 pence, by the end of the fighting. Now punters drinking to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day will be able to hark back to the similar prices paid by their ancestors who may have fought in the conflict.
The Flying Duck, in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, will be honouring VE Day with the first 80 pints pulled of its Wharfedale Brewery Gold on sale for 7p each.
The patriotic pints will be a welcome relief for drinkers who have been hit by soaring prices in pubs as the hospitality sector has been blitzed by surging energy bills, business rates and Chancellor Rachel Reeves' unpopular hike in National Insurance contributions for employers.
In the UK, the average price of a pint now stands at just over £5, and in central London that price can easily get to around £8.
Posting about their VE Day offer on Facebook, the Flying Duck said: "Come join us on the 8th May where we will be celebrating VE Day's 80th anniversary. 80 pints for 80 years at 1945 prices."
Gerard Simpson, Operations Director at The Flying Duck and Wharfedale Brewery, said: "I just thought it would be nice to do something to celebrate 80 years.
"We came up with 80 pints for 80 years at 80-year-old prices. It's the one beer [at that price] we'll be serving our Gold.
"We're quite lucky because as well as The Flying Duck we also have a brewery, Wharfedale Brewery, which means we're in a position where we can buy our beer for its cost so it wouldn't have an impact as a chain pub would have.
"We're a community pub, we like to raise money for local charities. I think it's nice to be able to do something and celebrate it. People can just drink away - once the 80 pints have gone they've gone."
