Spain has an abundance of beautiful holiday destinations within the mainland and its vast number of islands, which is why the country is not only loved by UK holidaymakers, but travellers across the globe. Last year, Spain broke records, welcoming 94 million tourists. While many will jet over to the country's more popular spots such as Barcelona, Madrid, or the islands, including Tenerife, Majorca and Ibiza, this gem, which boasts 23c heat in May, is the ideal spot for enjoying "laid-back vibes". And it just so happens to have one of the world's best beaches.
Formentera, just over 20 kilometres below Ibiza, is a beautiful island renowned for its unspoilt and beautiful beaches. However, there is one in particular that has caught worldwide attention, as it features on Lonely Planet's list of the world's top 10 best beaches. Platja Illetes, located on the northern part of the island, is Formentera's most famous beach.
The beach's fine white sand stretches over 450 metres and is accompanied by turquoise waters. Visitors can also participate in a number of activities there. These include windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing, stand-up paddle or snorkelling.
The beach also has an impressive 4.3-star rating on TripAdvisor, with 743 reviews. One visitor said: "Great place to anchor for a day. Easy to moor and sheltered by a small isle. The beach has a good restaurant, everything from ice cream to a lovely meal. Highly recommended"
Another wrote: "Beautiful cove, with crystal clear water. Recommendation to arrive early to find parking and take the best spot.
Beach equipped with bar, restaurant, bathrooms and public sunbeds (you spend about 20€ for an umbrella, two sunbeds and safe). Bar prices slightly high. In the afternoon it is very crowded, but still remains magnificent!"
With an island as stunning as this one, it is a must to explore the incredible landscapes.
Exploring Formentera can be done on horseback with visitors having the opportunity to choose from a shorter route, designed for less experienced riders, and a longer one ideal for more experienced riders. The two options ensure that no one misses out on the adventure.
For those who love to shop, the arts and crafts markets, which open from the beginning of May until mid-October, are the perfect stop. Here, you can find products designed and produced across the island, making great souvenirs.
