US president Donald Trump has made the jaw-dropping move of announcing a 100% tariff on all movies that have been produced in "foreign lands" in a major blow to the UK film industry. Warning that Hollywood is dying a "very fast death", he voiced his intentions to make movies great again by offering more favourable terms if they are filmed at home in the United States.
Lashing out at producers' cost-cutting efforts, which have often led them to film away from home, he posted a call to action on his Truth Social platform. "The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death. Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated," he wrote. "This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat.
"It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda! Therefore, I am authorizing the Department of Commerce, and the United States Trade Representative, to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100 per cent Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands. WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!" he insisted.
In a bid to get the industry "back on track", he enlisted film stalwarts Jon Voight, Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone as his "special envoys".
The trio all made an appearance recently at his Make America Great Again Victory Rally in Washington D.C - and he urged the crowd during his speech to refer to them as "ambassadors".
He has since confirmed they will join his administration and be his "eyes and ears" - and Jon Voight has already spoken in support of Trump's campaign.
"I'm old enough to have touched some years of the Golden Age of Hollywood, and I've seen its slow deterioration since. Today, we are in pretty bad shape," he insisted in Entertainment Weekly.
"Very few films are made here now, but we are fortunate to have an incoming President, who wants to restore Hollywood to its former glory, and with his help, I feel we can get done."
Mel Gibson however, who tragically lost his home to wildfires recently, expressed his surprise before quipping that he'd love his role to come with an "ambassador's residence".
