Johnny Mathis has announced his retirement from performance citing his age and memory issues as the reason in a touching statement. The 89-year-old singing legend confirmed the news in a statement on his Facebook page. “While there are still some exciting concerts coming up, regrettably all Johnny Mathis concerts from June 2025 onwards are now cancelled," it read. "As many of you may already be aware, Johnny Mathis is approaching his 90th birthday this year. So, it’s with sincere regret that due to Mr. Mathis’ age and memory issues which have accelerated, we are announcing his retirement from touring & live concerts.”
The star still has four concerts remaining on his 2025 Voice of Romance tour before he officially retires, according to his website with his final show scheduled for May 18. The post confirmed “refunds will be made through the original point of purchase,” for cancelled shows listed after that date. “Johnny Mathis & his entire staff send their heartfelt gratitude to all Mathis Fans worldwide for your continued love & support of his music! It’s truly been ‘Wonderful, Wonderful,'” the statement concluded.
Fans were quick to flood the comments with support and tributes to the When A Child Is Born singer. "Always been my favorite singer since my Mom introduced his music to me when I was 2. My husband and I have been married 55 years and OUR SONG since the first day is Johnny Mathis The Twelfth Of Never. Johnny, I will love you, your voice, your style til the end of time!!!!!!!!!" one gushed.
"This is very sad. We were fortunate to see him in Worcester several years ago. Truly a class man with a golden voice. Thank you for the endless joy you’ve blessed us with!" another added.
A third chimed in: "My grandmother loved your music. We would watch your concerts on VHS. To retire at 90 is truly admirable. Thank you for all of the years you have shared your songs with everyone. Best wishes to you."
A fourth wrote: "Thank you so, so much for the Mathis Magic, Johnny. Your music has been the backdrop to my life over so many years. I have many happy memories of seeing you live in the UK. I will continue to listen to your music each and every day. Wishing you a long and happy retirement."

Johnny broke through in 1956 with his self-titled debut album, he went on to become one of the best-selling recording artists of the 20th century with 73 albums making the Billboard Charts.
His hits include the tacks Too Much, Too Little, Too Late, Gina, What Will My Mary Say and The Twelfth of Never. He was also awarded The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. He also has three songs - 'Chances Are,' 'It’s Not For Me To Say and Misty - in the Grammy Hall of Fame.
